| Hi, this is Debbie!! This letter appeared in the Toledo Blade, a newspaper in Ohio. Toledo Blade July 14, 2005 Something is Wrong with Psychiatry Your editorial, "How about 'Cruise control'?" omitted facts. Tom Cruise was reacting to Brooke Shield's book in which she advocates taking antidepressants. Cruise wasn't demeaning mental illness or postpartum depression but disagrees with psychiatry's current treatment for it, as do many others. Ask the people at Red Lake and Columbine what they think of antidepressants? The editorial mentioned Andrea Yates, but she didn't kill her kids until she was on antidepressants. Plenty of recent mass murderers (which used to be rare) were on antidepressants. In December 2004, the FDA issued a Black Box warning on antidepressants to alert patients of the risk of suicide caused by these drugs. This is the most serious type of warning in prescription drug labeling. The next step would be suspending antidepressants entirely. Great Britain has already done this by forbidding the prescription of antidepressants like Paxil, Zoloft, Luvox, etc., for anyone under 18 years old. Days after Matt Lauer praised the use of Ritalin to Tom Cruise, the FDA released a new warning for ADHD drugs like Concerta, Ritalin, Strattera, and Adderall. It says these drugs could cause hallucinations, suicidal thoughts, psychotic behavior, aggression, and cardiovascular problems such as high blood pressure, arrhythmia, and racing heartbeats. After all these years of psychiatrists drugging kids, you didn't hear any warning from them, yet they would have been the first to know. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that something is wrong with psychiatry and the drugs psychiatrists are pushing that are bankrupting our health-care systems. The history of psychiatry includes LSD, lobotomies, shock treatment, suicide-causing antidepressants, and releasing sexual predators as "cured." Now if that isn't a pseudo-science, then it certainly is a failed one! Ernest Ryan Love, Deb!!
